The Art of Exfoliation: Shedding Old Skin for a Radiant Glow

Did you know that every day we shed an astonishing 50 million skin cells? While a gecko might leave behind a neat skin skeleton, humans require a bit more assistance in the exfoliation process.

Why Exfoliate:

As we age , our bodies become slower to shed old skin cells and create new ones, which means that these old skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin leaving it looking dull, rough and dry. This build up can cause problems such as clogged pores and acne, not just on the face but on the whole body.

Most of us focus any kind of skincare routine on our face because that is what people see, especially in the Winter months when we are all heavily clad! However, as soon as the sun come out so do our backs, shoulders and limbs and we may notice that our skin looks a little neglected. Now is the time for proper exfoliation to remove the dead skin cell barrier and uncover the fresh cells below.

Manual and chemical exfoliants

Choosing the Right Exfoliator: Manual vs. Chemical

Manual exfoliation involves a product that contains some kind of abrasive granule, such as salt, sugar, or unfortunately micro-beads, that work to slough away the dead skin, revealing fresh cells underneath.

Chemical exfoliators contain much stronger ingredients such as AHAs and Retinol and should only be used under the supervision of a dermatologist, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

If you choose to use a manual body scrub, a gentle touch is all that is needed. Don’t try to scrub too hard or you may risk irritating your skin. Once a week should be all that is needed, especially if you have dry skin, as over-doing it could lead to irritation which will further dry out your skin. Pay particular attention to elbows and knees, which are often neglected and don’t forget about your feet!
