Should I exfoliate my body?

Gemma Cockrell

Did you know that we lose between 30,000 and 40,000 skin cells every minute?

That’s a whopping 50 million skin cells every day! Every few months my son’s Gecko leaves us a lovely skin skeleton as he emerges all shiny and new. Humans, unfortunately, don’t do the same. We need some help with shedding our skin, especially as we get older and our process of cell regeneration slows down. As we age, our bodies become slower to shed old skin cells and create new ones, which means that these old skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin leaving it looking dull, rough and dry. This build up can cause problems such as clogged pores and acne, not just on the face but on the whole body.

Most of us focus any kind of skincare routine on our face because that is what people see, especially in the Winter months when we are all heavily clad! However, as soon as the sun come out so do our backs, shoulders and limbs and we may notice that our skin looks a little neglected. Now is the time for proper exfoliation to remove the dead skin cell barrier and uncover the fresh cells below.

Which Exfoliator do I choose?

There are two types of exfoliation; manual and chemical.

Manual exfoliation involves a product that contains some kind of abrasive granule, such as salt, sugar, or unfortunately micro-beads, that work to slough away the dead skin, revealing fresh cells underneath.

Chemical exfoliators contain much stronger ingredients such as AHAs and Retinol and should only be used under the supervision of a dermatologist, particularly if you have sensitive skin.

If you choose to use a manual body scrub, a gentle touch is all that is needed. Don’t try to scrub too hard or you may risk irritating your skin. Once a week should be all that is needed, especially if you have dry skin, as over-doing it could lead to irritation which will further dry out your skin. Pay particular attention to elbows and knees, which are often neglected and don’t forget about your feet!

Body scrubs are brilliant at getting your skin ready for moisturising products, allowing the ingredients to penetrate more deeply. You may even find that some scrubs already contain a moisturising ingredient, such as our Grapefruit Body Scrub, which contains nourishing Coconut Oil, leaving your skin super smooth, soft and hydrated.

If you want fresh, healthy-looking skin then regular exfoliation is a must. Try to make it a once a week habit, throughout the year, don’t go mad, and you will be rewarded with super soft, beautiful glowing skin that you will be proud to show off during the warmer months!

Try Puremess Grapefruit Body Scrub from our online store, you will be amazed at what it can do for your skin!
