Sustainable Skincare: What It Really Means & How Puremess Is Doing It Differently

Sustainable skincare is everywhere—from fancy labels to eco-influencer hashtags. But what does it actually mean? And more importantly, is it always as sustainable as it claims?

After listening to two incredibly insightful podcast episodes—When Beauty Misses the Big Picture and Why Sustainable Beauty Isn’t Sustainable Anymore—we’ve been reflecting deeply on what sustainable skincare really looks like here at Puremess.

Spoiler: it’s not just about packaging.

🌿 What Sustainable Skincare Should Mean

So many brands promote “eco beauty” through packaging alone—cardboard sleeves, green leaf logos, or “clean” buzzwords. But real sustainability requires a much broader, deeper approach.

Sustainable skincare should consider:

  • Ingredient sourcing and impact

  • Supply chain emissions

  • Waste reduction and recyclability

  • Skin health and safety

  • Ethical production and long-term transparency

It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress and responsibility.

🌊 How Puremess Is Doing Sustainable Skincare Differently

At Puremess, we’re on a mission to make skincare better—for your skin, your health, and our planet. Here’s how:

✅ We use Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP)

Our packaging is made from certified plastic collected from coastal regions at high risk of ocean pollution. This diverts plastic from the ocean and gives it a new purpose—clean beauty containers.

♻️ We use PET plastic where POP isn’t available

PET is fully recyclable and significantly lighter than aluminium, meaning lower emissions during transport and manufacturing. While aluminium is often seen as eco-friendly, it’s energy-intensive to produce unless made from recycled materials—and it’s prone to damage in transit.

We make packaging decisions thoughtfully—not based on trends, but on long-term impact.

🌿 We formulate with natural, skin-loving botanicals

No greenwashing. No microplastics. Just ethically sourced oils, butters, and extracts that support both skin health and environmental care.

🧼 We keep things local and low-waste

From small-batch production to recyclable or biodegradable shipping materials, every step of our process is designed to reduce impact.

📈 And We’re Taking It a Step Further…

We’re proud to be working with FuturePlus—a sustainability consultancy helping us measure, improve, and future-proof our impact.

💚 We’re also now Impact Certified—a reflection of our commitment to real, measurable change.

🧴 Why Sustainable Skincare Matters

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being honest, transparent, and always improving. Greenwashing might look good on shelves—but it doesn’t serve people or the planet.

When you choose a sustainable skincare brand like Puremess, you’re choosing:

  • Healthier ingredients

  • Lower waste

  • Ethical packaging

  • Long-term value, not short-term hype

Because beauty shouldn’t cost the Earth.
